Jack Kaufman

d. October 6, 2013

Jack Kaufman, age 74, died on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at Hospice. The son of the late Charles Herbert Kaufman and Fanny Kaplan, Jack was born in New York City in 1939.
He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1960 and went on to earn his M.A. from the University of Minnesota and his M.S.W. from the University of Southern California. He was a professor of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin before co-founding the Wisconsin Institute for Psychotherapy with his wife, Dorothy Helman. This Institute was one of the first of its kind in Wisconsin. He was an esteemed therapist who practiced for 40 years in both Milwaukee and Madison.

He was a political activist particularly in the 1960s and '70s, but continued to take a keen interest in politics throughout his life. He was a serious art collector and was involved with the Madison Print Club for many years.

He had a fierce intelligence and a warm and generous heart. He will be sorely missed by his son, Roan Kaufman; daughters Jillian and Erica Heisman; his son-in-law Mark Gibbons; granddaughters Sophia and Eva Heisman-Gibbons; and grandson, Asher Heisman; as well as his sister, Gerry Kaufman; and nephews, Matthew and David Milliken.
