Ida Norton

Stoughton - Aida (Ida) Mietz Norton peacefully entered eternal rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday September 26th 2015. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 12, 1917 to immigrant parents from Lithuania Zigmund and Amelia Mileko. Aida and her sister Virginia grew up above their parent's small grocery store a block off Michigan Avenue very close to the Chicago Water Tower. She often talked about how her parents helped people during the depression, playing around the water tower and listening to speakers on the "soap box".

Aida graduated from the West Side Hospital Chicago School of Nursing as a registered nurse on June 10, 1938. She joined the US Army on February 10, 1942 attached to the Army Air Core discharged on December 31, 1945 as a First Lieutenant. The majority of here time was served in England and France. She survived many bombings and crossed the channel under combat conditions into France days after the intimal invasion, D day, taking care of wounded soldiers and airman in a field hospital. She often talked about riding in a truck with the American Liberation Army, through the Arch of Triumph to the cheers of the liberated French people. Toward the end of her life she would often talk about how hard it was to choose which of the wounded to help and set those aside for which there was no hope.

Shortly after returning home she married Edward Mietz a decorated Navy veteran and they had a son, Michael (Mietz). In 1957 they moved to Merrill Wisconsin purchasing and operating Sergeant Bill's Club in conjunction with the Corning Dance Hall that served large weddings almost every Saturday.
Aida continued to work as an RN for many years at Holy Cross Hospital in Merrill. She was a well-respected Head Nurse who over her career helped thousands of people.

After Edwards's death Aida later married Charles Norton and they had a wonderful marriage enjoying living in Florida, Arkansas and Wisconsin for many years. Aida loved animals and was a supporter of the Humane Society. She volunteered for many years at the William S. Middleton VA hospital in Madison, she was a life Member of American Legion Post 534 McFarland and a longtime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran church participating with the Mary-Martha Circle and the quilting group.

Aida was preceded in death by her parents, sister Virginia, husbands Edward and Charles and grandson Scott Mietz. Aida loved her grandchildren and her great grandchildren Morgan and Brooke, daughters of Chad and Ann (Thompson) Mietz of McFarland who called her GG. She is survived by her son Mike and his wife Ruth (Zastrow) Mietz, Grandson Chad Mietz, his wife Ann and daughters Morgan and Brooke.

The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to the Harmony Staff in Stoughton and the Silver Agrace Team from Janesville for such wonderful care and support. Memorials can be made to Agrace.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Tuesday October 13, 2015 at Good Shepherd by the Lake Lutheran Church, 1860 US H 51, Stoughton Wisconsin, 53589-3112, with a lunch to follow. Interment will be at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery-King with full military honors at a date yet to be determined.
