Ian Michael Kasten, age 16, of Rockford, IL, passed away on October 28, 2025, at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, WI. Born on April 25, 2009, Ian was our firstborn son and the purest soul we have ever known.
Ian lived with nonverbal autism and epilepsy, but those challenges never defined him. What did define him was his infectious laugh, his love of tickles that turned into full belly giggles, and the joy he brought to everyone around him. Ian had a way of seeking out connection—whether through laughter, games, chin pushes, tickles, or simply being near those he loved.
Ian experienced a significant seizure that led to cardiac arrest. Despite the incredible efforts of his medical team and our hope through three close calls, it became clear that Ian’s brain injury was irreversible. In the midst of heartbreak, we chose to honor Ian’s spirit through organ donation. On November 2, Ian gave the ultimate gift of life—donating his heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. Through his selfless gift, Ian’s light continues to shine in the lives of others. We could not bring our baby home, but somewhere, a person continues to have a chance and life.
Ian loved simple joys: his favorite snacks like Cheez-Its, Chex Mix, KitKats, chocolate mini donuts, potato chips, and pretzels. He enjoyed video games, including Rock Band, Sonic the Hedgehog, Animal Crossing, and all the Zelda games ever made. He loved his tire swing, swimming, and watching the same part of a movie over and over on the patio with his family. He taught us what unconditional love truly means, and we are honored to have been his parents.
Ian is deeply missed by his parents, Tom and Lindsey Kasten, his brother Morgan, and all who were lucky enough to know him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 20, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Lombardi Club in Rockford, IL. We will honor Ian by enjoying his favorite snacks and playing his favorite games together. Please join us in celebrating the beautiful life of our Bubby Dude.
