Howard Heusinger

Madison - Howard Joseph Heusinger, age 95, died peacefully at Agrace Hospice, March 2, 2018. Howard was born in Marinette, WI on May 15, 1922, to Marie (Mech) and Joseph Heusinger. He attended Garfield School and graduated from Marinette High School in 1940. Afterwards he began working for the Wisconsin Bell Telephone Company. That is also where he and Joyce Shefky began their life together. Howard and Joyce married July 29, 1944.

In 1943 Howard took leave from his job and was inducted into the service. He served in the Army Signal Corps. for 2 1/2 years. Afterwards he returned to Marinette to go back to work, raise his family and build their first home. Beginning in 1956, Howard was promoted several times at Wisconsin Bell. He and Joyce moved the family to Sheboygan, Milwaukee, Madison then back to Milwaukee where he was a network planning and engineering manager for all the central offices of the state. After 42 years with the company, he retired in 1982.

Howard took pride in his accomplishments, his family, his friends and in helping others. He was a scoutmaster, a member of the Knights of Columbus and president of St. Vincent de Paul Society (Mukwonago). He served his parishes as a council member, lay minister, and usher. Howard was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of Wisconsin. He was especially proud of the service projects they completed over the years. In November 2011, the Pioneers helped facilitate his Badger Honor Flight to Washington DC - a most memorable day. Howard had another passion and special talent for wine making in his later years and enjoyed treating his family and friends to the fruits of his labor.

Howard loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing with friends and family. After retirement, he took up cross-country skiing and curling. He was an avid fan of the UW Badgers and attended football games until recently. He had a lifelong interest in the Green Bay Packers and the PGA. Most importantly, nothing gave him more pleasure than sharing in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and praying for them each night.

Howard is survived by his children, Margaret (Robert) Brown, Mary Jacobs, Marsha (Paul) Beloungy, Steven Heusinger (Susan Draper); his grandchildren, Jill (Keith) Johnson, Jennifer McGinty, Rebecca (Brian) Brown-Zehren, Matthew Brown, Karen (Michael) Searles, Kristen (Luis Valdez Morales) Heusinger, Jason Heusinger, Paula (Jeff) Wolfe, Jody Brown, Jennifer (Ryan) White, Alan (Laurie) Vasquez; his great grandchildren, Brianna, Brooke, Brittany, Mallory, Dawson, Sarah, Ryan, JR, Luke, McKenzie, Hayden, Max, Kailey, Casey and Valentina; two brothers, Dr. George (Marge) Heusinger, Norfolk NE and Vernon (Ethel) Heusinger, Marinette WI; sisters-in-law, Marian Mansfield and Bette Trempe; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and very dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joyce, son, Howard J. Heusinger, grandson, Steven Joseph Heusinger and his sister, Marjorie Hanson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 405 S. Owen Dr., Madison, on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. with Father William Nolan presiding. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison a luncheon will follow back at church. A visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

Memorials may be made to the Queen of Peace Endowment Fund, St. Vincent de Paul Society or Agrace Hospice and Palliative Care Madison. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Coventry Village, the staff, and volunteers of Agrace and to Howard's dear friends who remained close over the years.
