Madison - Herbert "Curly" Hanneman, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Agrace HospiceCare after a short illness. He was born on February 26, 1917 in Thayer, MO to Frederick and Bertha (Prinz) Hanneman. A World War II Veteran, Herb served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946. He survived the Bataan Death March and for 3 � years was a POW in a Japanese prison camp. On April 17, 1946 he was united in marriage to Edna Butz. They were married for 63 years until her death in July, 2009. Herb worked for the City of Madison Street Department, retiring in 1979 as Street Superintendent. Herb was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church, loved sports, traveling and displaying his wit with a funny story or joke. Herb is survived by two children, Richard (Christine) Hanneman of Algoma and Betty Hanneman of Madison; two grandchildren, Matt and Mike Hanneman; and other relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Selma, Ada, Alice and Fran; and one brother, Eugene. A visitation will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 17th at BETHANY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 3910 Mineral Point Road, Madison; with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be held at Sunset Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Herbert to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711; or to Bethany United Methodist Church, 3910 Mineral Point Road, Madison, WI 53705.
