Madison - Dr. H. James Hulburt, 93, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013 at UW Hospital.
Born on November 12, 1919 in Arlington (MA), he was the son of Adelaide and Stennett Hulburt. Upon his graduation from Freeport (IL) High School, he went on to continue his education at Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago.
Relocating to Madison, his professional career was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the Navy and served in the South Pacific, principally on American Samoa, where he served in a medical unit.
After the war, he returned to Madison and served as an Optometrist for over 40 years. On June 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Beatrice Heine at First Methodist Church in Freeport (IL). During their 48 years of marriage, they were blessed with two sons, James and Craig.
After his retirement, they spent many years in Bradenton (FL) until Bea's passing in 1997. Four years later, he married Alice Johnson at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb on October 13, 2001. They continued to reside in Bradenton (FL) until May, 2011 and moved to Monona to be closer to family.
He was a founding member of the Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ in Madison and a member of UCC Church in Bradenton (FL).
During his lifetime, he was also a member of the Madison Masonic Temple, the Zor Shrine Patrol, the Wisconsin Optometric Association, and downtown Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of Monona, two sons, James (Judy) of Belleville and Craig (Mark) of Monona, a sister, Phyllis (Karl) Ives of Forsythe, (IL), a granddaughter Courtney and grandson Joshua, both of Belleville.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice and his parents.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison with Rev. Scott Marrese-Wheeler presiding. A visitation will start at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
