Madison - Henny Schwarz, née Kotljar, died on Friday, October 6, 2017 at University Hospital. She was born on March 7, 1920 in Kleinsteinbach, Germany the third child of Rose (Rabinowitz) and Adolph Kotljar. She spent her childhood in Karlsruhe, Germany, before escaping Nazi persecution, by emigrating to the United States in 1937. She lived in New York City and there met her husband, Werner, also a refugee from Nazism. They were married in 1942 and shared 67 years of marriage.
Forced to begin employment immediately upon arrival in this country, Henny worked for many years in the New York fashion industry and later for an ophthalmologist in New York City.
She and Werner enjoyed their retirement years in Madison, where they made many good and lasting friendships.
Henny is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Seth Perelman of Verona, two beloved granddaughters, Elisheva (Paul Cherlin, fiancé) of Sartell, Minnesota and Abigayl of Carlsbad, California, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Werner, her sisters, Friedel Levy and Edith Landsman, and brother, Frederick Cutler.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Oakwood Village-University Woods for their care and compassion.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 9, 2017 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with burial to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jewish Social Services of Madison.
