MADISON Helene Charlotte Stephenson (nee Roth), age 83, died Monday, July 11, 2011.
Helene was born December 1, 1927, in Monroe, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Huldreich and Alma (Stauffacher) Roth. She came to Madison to attend the University of Wisconsin and while there was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. Helene worked for the State of Wisconsin for many years, where she met Philip. They were united in marriage in June of 1970, and around 1983 retired from their jobs at the State for what they called a ""mid-life career change"". During retirement, she and Phil enjoyed many activities, including their antiques business, gardening, bird watching, and their participation in the New Horizons Band, where she played the flute and piccolo. Helene possessed a zest for life, had a talent for friendship, and was devoted to her family. She will be missed. Philip preceded her in death on November 24, 2009.
Helene is survived by her children, Tuck Campbell, Kietra (John) King, Christine Stephenson, Janeen Stephenson (Leonard Bohmann), Carol Stephenson, and Jim (Kerri) Campbell; grandchildren, Jason, Jayme, Robert and James Campbell, Matt Cunningham and Nick Bohmann; great-grandchild, Braiden Campbell; a very special niece, Ann (Robert) Schoenke and their children; and many friends.
Helene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Amy, sister Miriam, and nephew Tom Campbell.
The family extends a special thank you to Helene's friend Ann Z for her care and support over the last several years, and also to the many caring people at Heartland Country Village which was Mom's home for the last couple of months.
