Stoughton- Heidi Ruth Hubing passed away at home on December 3rd, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on September 7th, 1963 at Stoughton Hospital. Heidi and her brother, Patrick Hagen, were raised on a dairy and tobacco farm outside of Stoughton by their father, Glenn Hagen, and mother, Joan (Ehle) Heimlich. Her mornings were filled with chores in the barn and summers were spent harvesting tobacco. On the farm, Heidi developed a steadfast strength and “don’t stop until it’s done” work ethic that she carried with her for the rest of her life.
Heidi attended Stoughton High School, where she was involved in cheerleading, theater and several musical groups. At 16, she began dating Troy Hubing, who would later become her husband, while performing in a production of Oklahoma together. She attended Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN for two years, and then graduated summa cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater with a degree in Elementary Education.
Heidi married the love of her life, Troy, on October 4th, 1986. They moved into a farmhouse on her family farm and put down roots across the field from her father, Glenn. Together they raised three children, Alex (Alie) Hubing, Casey Hubing and Elizabeth (Derek) Dickman. Heidi was a dedicated and selfless mom who spent much of her time chauffeuring the boys to and from sporting events and taking Lizzie to voice lessons and play rehearsals, and she never complained about it. She always carried a book to read in the parking lot while she waited for the kids when they told her the wrong pickup time. She was a post-it note enthusiast, a master of multitasking and would never go anywhere without her pocket-sized calendar book, even though her family and colleagues teased her for it. Heidi made the most of her summers off from school, enjoying time on the water and in the sun with her family at the Hubings’ houseboat on the Mississippi and her mother’s cabin in Boulder Junction. In 2015, Alex and his wife Alie made Heidi a grandma, a title she wore proudly, when they had their son Joey, and again when their son Sam was born in 2018.
She was an elementary school teacher for 30 years. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of countless students, parents and colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends. She began her teaching career in Verona, WI, where she taught for 3 years. From there, she took a job teaching at Fox Prairie Elementary School in Stoughton, where she would spend the remaining 27 years of her teaching career. Heidi’s family remembers former students often stopping them while running errands with her so they could share a fond memory from her classroom and tell her “you were my favorite teacher.”
She was preceded in death by her father Glenn, her step-father Don, her mother-in-law Maureen and her grandparents Ruth, Willmer, Ellen and Palmer. Heidi will be missed every day, but her legacy of love will live on through the many people that she influenced in her life. She will be remembered for her unconditional kindness, infinite patience, servant heart, Lutheran Norwegian stoicism and empathetic voice of reason. Anyone lucky enough to meet Heidi can attest that to know her, was to love her.
In 2019, Heidi was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia. With the help of Agrace Hospice Care and family, Troy was able to keep Heidi at home on their farm, in the house they built together. He dedicated the last four years to caring for her, their love unwavering through even the most difficult of circumstances. Heidi’s family would specifically like to thank Michelle (Micki) Kostner, Bernadette, Kathy, Sheri, Jenny and Kurt for the special roles they played in her care.
