Hedwig Werren

October 13, 1916 — August 18, 2014

MADISON- Hedwig "Hedy" Werren, died quietly on Monday August 18, 2014. She came close to celebrating her 98th birthday, but instead left this world showing the same quiet dignity with which she lived her life.
Hedy was born to Swiss immigrants, Gottlieb and Marie Werren, and was raised in a Blue Mounds Wisconsin cheese factory with her 4 brothers. She worked her way through Platteville State Teachers College and later completed her Master's Degree in Elementary Education at UW Madison. She spent 44 years as an elementary school teacher. Most of her time teaching was spent at Midvale Elementary School in Madison.
Hedy was a world traveler, spending many of her summers in countries all over the globe. She loved birds and flowers, and devoted time to the outdoors. She was a marvelous seamstress and crocheter, and left her family with exquisite examples of her needlework. She volunteered many hours after her retirement at Meriter Hospital, and will be remembered by many there as the lady who crocheted thousands of tiny caps for new babies in the nursery. Even when she was forced to relocate to an assisted living facility, she still produced these little treasures for many years.
We will remember Hedy for her strength and her independence. She worked hard in her lifetime, but always took time for her parents and friends. She is an example to those who knew her of a woman who took care of herself and others. It was difficult for her to give up this freedom of choice over the past years, but she accepted her limitations and made the best of her life in assisted living. She found a whole new family in the staff of Wynwood West, and their love for her over the many years she spent there was important to both her and her family.
Not only does her family want to thank Wynwood for their care, but also the amazing people who worked with her from Agrace Hospice. The combination of these two organizations kept Hedy as comfortable and as happy as was possible in recent years.
Hedy is survived by her youngest brother, Ernest Werren of Colorado, and her sister-in-law Rosemary Werren of Madison. She will be missed particularly by the family of her niece, Nancy Werren Werth, and also by many nieces and nephews and their children.
A private family burial will be held at a later date. Donations in Hedy's memory may be made to Agrace hospice of Madison, or to Olbrich Gardens.
