Harvey Jaeckle

June 22, 1917 — September 21, 2014

Harvey Jaeckle, age 97, of Madison peacefully left this world on September 21, 2014 at Attic Angels Nursing Home in Madison with family at his bedside. Harvey was born on June 22, 1917 in Milwaukee, the son of Fred and Amanda Jaeckle. In his youth he worked in the carpentry trade, as a librarian, and at the Milwaukee city hall.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II for 3 years with an honorable discharge in 1945.
He met his wife, Hardy (Bernadine) Wallner, at a party during the great depression. They started dating, fell in love and married on August 9, 1941. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage until Hardy's death in 2010.
Shortly after marriage, in 1943 Harvey was drafted into the Navy and was stationed in San Francisco and at Great Lakes Naval in the Chicago area. Their first son, Fred, was born while Harvey was still in the Navy. They were blessed with a second son, Ned, 9 years later and shortly after his birth they built a new home in Brookfield. They both worked on the construction of their home doing nailing, raising partitions, and landscaping. They lived in that home until May of 1958 when Harvey and Hardy moved to Madison and started their business, Jaeckle Wholesale Inc.
In the early days of the business Harvey made many friends and spent most of his time on the road selling. The business remains active to this day with the third generation, two of Harvey's grandsons, owning and managing it.
Harvey and Hardy traveled to different destinations in the US and also took several trips to Europe including visits to Hardy's relatives in Austria.
After retirement Harvey and Hardy spent winter months at their second home in Green Valley, Arizona until Harvey was no longer able to travel and then they moved to Attic Angels apartments in 2006. During his retirement he enjoyed visiting with his grandchildren, and eventually his great grandchildren. Those visits always brought a big smile to his face. He also enjoyed golf until he was no longer able to play.
In recent years he especially enjoyed going for rides in the countryside with his son Fred, and also many outings with his grandsons Matthew and Daniel which included trips to festivals, state parks, live music venues, and even dancing. He also enjoyed visiting with his grandsons Jeff and Torrey, their wives, and his great grandchildren. He attended many theater events, musicals, and his great grandchildren's concerts and other school performances. He also enjoyed all the major holidays at Fred's home with his entire family present each year.
He is survived by his two sons Fred (Mert) Jaeckle and Ned (Sarah) Jaeckle; six grandsons Jeffery (Betsy), Torrey (Stephanie), Matthew, Daniel, Louis, and Henry Jaeckle; five great grandchildren Owen, Elizabeth, Alex, Stella, and Isabelle Jaeckle. He was preceded in death by his wife Hardy, his 3 brothers Clarence, William, and Eldred and three sisters Florence, Anita, and Evelyn.
He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and kind and gentle spirit, but most of all he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
A celebration of Harvey's life will be held outdoors, lakeside, at Bishop's Bay Country Club, 3500 Bishop's Bay Dr. (County Hwy. M, opposite E. Signature Dr.) Middleton, WI on Friday September 26, 2014. The visitation will start at 11 AM, the service and celebration at noon, with a luncheon following the celebration.
Cress Funeral Home Speedway Road is serving the family and in lieu of flowers donations can be made to Attic Angels Community or Agrace HospiceCare.
The family wishes to thank Agrace HospiceCare for their loving care of Harvey. We are especially grateful to the nurses, CNA's, and other staff at Attic Angels for the love and care they gave to Harvey over many years. We know that he enjoyed your companionship and had great affection for all of you.
