Harold Borenstein

July 11, 1916 — February 1, 2014

Harold Borenstein, 97 year old son of Nathan and Celia Borenstein, immigrants from Czarist Russia, died peacefully at the home of Nicki, and son-in-law Ken Milin, in Deerfield, Illinois on Saturday, February 1, 2014. He was born on July 11, 1916 in Montello, Wisconsin and moved to Madison at age 5. His father had been importing the red granite that is seen throughout Madison and at Beth Israel Synagogue which they helped build. He married the "love of his life" Frieda "Babe" Becker whom he described as the most beautiful girl on the UW campus. He worked with his father at their Schenk's Corner Dry Good and Shoe Store and later ran Harbor Student Rentals, a student housing business, with his wife. They raised three daughters Phyllis (Howard Eisenberg-deceased), Marilyn (deceased) Neil Holman, and Nicki (Ken Milin). He had 7 Grandchildren Nathan (Jordana), Adam (Jessica), and Leah Eisenberg, Mollie & Daniel Holman, Samantha & James Milin, and four great-granddaughters. He served in World War II in North Africa and Italy and those comrades remained friends all his life. He will be fondly remembered by Laverne Marcus, his "Breakfast Buddies" and Dr. John McDermott Jr. Memorials can be made to Beth Israel Synagogue or Veterans of WWII. Graveside services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, 1 Speedway Road at 11AM Tuesday, February 4, 2014.
