Obituary

Hans A. Rahn, age 75, passed away peacefully at home in Madison, Wisconsin, on June 25, 2026.

Hans was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1951, to his mother, Loretta Rahn (Gumz), and biological father, Harold Thillemann. He was later adopted by his stepfather, Milton Rahn.

Hans attended West High School and LaFollette High School. Hans would say, however, that he received his real education from the “school of hard knocks.” As he reached adulthood, he found that his personality and natural talents suited a career centered around social interaction. He became an excellent bartender and could best be described as a “social chemist.” Hans could mix up a drink with ease, but even more impressive was his ability to concoct a conversation. His social skills were exceptional, and he eventually earned the position of Bar Manager, where his people skills and passion for hospitality were invaluable.

When Hans wasn’t keeping himself busy with work, he loved to unwind by watching a game. He enjoyed all types of sports, but he was first and foremost a Brewers fan. Baseball was his favorite sport, and he shared that passion with his son, Derek. The two attended many games together, which Hans often noted as one of his favorite ways to spend a day. He also rooted for many other Wisconsin teams, including the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Milwaukee Bucks. His passion for sports also extended to collecting sports cards.

Hans also enjoyed NASCAR. He appreciated not only the skill of the drivers, but also the racecars themselves. He was fascinated by motor vehicles of all kinds, including racecars, collector cars, and motorcycles.

In 2013, Hans received a life-saving gift: a pristine liver through the UW Transplant Program. That gift gave Hans many additional years of life and more time to enjoy the people and interests he loved.

Hans is survived by his loving son, Derek Rahn; granddaughter, Kailee Rahn; half-sister, Karen (Larry) Hafenstein of Lake Mills; and half-brothers, Don Thillemann and Jim Thillemann of Racine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Loretta Rahn and Milton Rahn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Hans’s honor to the UW Transplant Program, in gratitude for the life-saving gift that gave him many more years of life.
