Madison - Gunnery Sergeant, Richard W. Fischer, of the United States Marine Corps, was recently identified, after being listed missing in action in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Dick was born on June 15, 1947 to John N. and Eleanor J. (Thompson) Fischer in Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York. In 1965, he graduated from East High School. Dick was a lifeguard for the Madison beaches, and a member of Four Lakes Yacht Club, which he sailed through. After attending one year of college at the University of Wisconsin "" Madison, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966. He went to Vietnam in October of 1967, and was listed as missing on January 8, 1968. In 1996, his remains were discovered in Vietnam, and identified in September of 2007. GySgt Fischer is survived by his sister, Ann Fischer; and her daughter, Jamie Fassbender; and her children, Kevin Gundlach and Karah Gundlach. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Jay and Carl, in 1958. Dicks mother died on November 12, 2002, not knowing that her son was killed. A funeral service honoring GySgt Fischers life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2007 at CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 944 E. Gorham Street, Madison with the Revs. Dale Chapin and Glen Reichelderfer presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. Burial with full military honors will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorials are appreciated to Christ Presbyterian Church.
