Gregory Simonis

October 12, 1942 — February 13, 2014

Madison- Gregory C. Simonis, age 71, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Meriter Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Stevens Point on October 12, 1942, the son of Cyril and Dorothy Simonis. Greg graduated from P.J. Jacobs Senior High School and received his bachelor's degree from UW-Stevens Point. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served his country during Vietnam. Greg was honorably discharged in 1972. His work experiences included being an insurance agent for NML Insurance, and working as a grocery store manager. Greg dedicated his life to the McFarland American Legion Post 534 and enjoyed being a State Chaplain. On September 12, 1998 he married his wife, Nancy. Greg enjoyed hunting, fishing, and most of all spending time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and is lovingly survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Greg (Brenda), Brian (Rhonda), Jeff, Chris (Samantha), Sarah (Adam), Kathy, Don, Chris (Greg), and Corey (Mike); 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; his mother, Dorothy; his first wife, Susan Entwistle; two brothers, Dennis (Phyllis) and Mike (Sharon); two sisters, Kathy (Dana) and Lori; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; many friends; and his beloved canine companions, Daisy and Doodles. Greg was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Phillip and Jeffrey; and brother-in-law, Don. A Celebration of Greg's Life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the McFarland American Legion Post 534, 4911 Burma Road. Memorial services will start at 1:00 PM with Chaplain John Berg officiating. Military Honors will follow. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon reception immediately following at the McFarland Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the McFarland American Legion, the Wounded Warriors Program, or to Badger Honor Flight. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of Meriter Hospital for their care and compassion.
