Godfrey J. Helt, 93, of Dane passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at Waunakee Manor. He was born March 25, 1923, in Ashton to William and Rose (Ripp) Helt. He married Rosella Lambert on May 28, 1949.
Godfrey was a lifetime farmer who devoted time to local government by serving on the Town of Dane board for 26 years, the local EMS board and Dane fire department board, both for 16 years, some as president.
He enjoyed playing with his granddaughter, Lexy, his pride and joy, and teaching her the values of family and farming with unconditional love. During the summers, Lexy spent weekdays with him playing cards, go-fish and inspecting the farm. He shared stories about how he and Rosella worked the farm and raised Lexy's mother and uncle.
Godfrey enjoyed a good round of euchre with the many friends and neighbors who stopped by the farm. He was known as a kind, soft spoken, gentle soul with a smile on his face. Always in good spirits, he never complained and always had something nice to say.
Survivors include son, Robert; daughter, Terri (Jason) Karls and granddaughter, Lexy; brothers, Sylvester, Bill (Virginia) and Tony (Joan); sister, Dorothy (Gene) Voegeli; and sisters-in-law, Viola, Doris, Marlene and Diane. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosella; sister, Rose; brothers, Fred, John, Joe, Gilbert, Donald and Tom; brothers-in-law, Claude Schuster and John Endres; and sister-in-law, Carol Helt.
The family thanks Waunakee Manor staff and all of Godfrey's many visitors who brightened his days, especially Father Chad Droessler for his prayers and visits.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 22, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Parish St. Michael's Church, 109 S. Military Rd., Dane. Friends may call at the church Monday starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
