Gloria A. Hoffmann Roeber, age 86, died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 28, 2016, surrounded by her family. We rejoice that she is with the Lord and has finally been reunited with her beloved husband and son.
Gloria was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Anita Hoffmann Straus and Nelson Hoffmann on January 8, 1930. She attended Milwaukee public Schools where she met the love of her life, Richard K. Roeber. The two were married in August of 1949 and eventually moved to Madison, Wisconsin to attend the University of Wisconsin. Through the years they became the proud parents of three children.
Gloria and Dick were able to fulfill a common dream when they purchased and operated Roeber Pharmacies in three small towns surrounding Madison; Waunakee, Sun Prairie and Oregon. They were truly a team and in their early years they worked side by side to ensure their success. Subsequently, Dick developed a brain tumor and died at the young age of 52. Gloria was devastated and never stopped mourning her beloved husband. However, she became the matriarch of the family and provided a strong and loving model for her children.
Gloria's son, Greg, died from melanoma in 1995, which was a second severe blow. Yet Gloria persevered and continued to care for us all, even caring for her elderly mother who died at the age of 105.
Gloria loved the Lord and had a flare for fun; loved to play the piano, to sing, to dine out and eat chocolate. One of her favorite mottos was "Life is uncertain, eat dessert first". She also had a wonderful sense of style and loved to decorate her home for each season and holiday, especially Christmas. She loved flowers and had a beautiful garden. She also loved the theater. Above all she was a loving, kind and generous person who anonymously helped many a needy person.
Gloria is survived by her daughters, Anita (Mike) Ashworth and Marie Roeber (Tim Swanson) and her former daughter-in-law, Barbara Roeber (Larry Black). She is further survived by a brother, Father Robert F. Hoffmann and a sister, Nancy (Rudi) Hermann. Other survivors include a sister-in-law, Nancy Spencer and brother-in-law, Alan (Donna) Roeber. Gloria was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Richard; her son Greg; as well as her mother and father-in-law, Henry and Rosalyn Roeber.
A celebration of life for all family and friends will be held at Rex's Innkeeper, Waunakee, Wisconsin on Sunday, June 12th from 2:00 to 4:00pm. A buffet luncheon will be served.
Please bring your memories to share.
