Gloria Hay

September 23, 1928 — July 28, 2014

Gloria Ann Bittner Hay, Ph.D. passed on July 28, 2014.

Gloria was born in Johnstown, PA to Robert Bittner and Edith Elizabeth Schmucker Bittner. She is survived by brother Robert B. Bittner of Thousand Oaks, CA and sister Patricia Jane Stohr of Prescott, AZ, sons Richard Cameron Hay, David Gordon Hay, and William Mark Hay, four granddaughters and 2 great grandchildren.

She attended Penn State University and Dominican College (Racine, Wis) and earned her Ph.D. at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Gloria edited documents as a civilian working for the Navy and wrote copy for a Wellesley, MA advertising agency, but spent the greatest part of her career in the education field. She taught at levels from elementary (St. Joseph School, Racine, WI) to college (Business Institute at UW-Madison), coordinated a community development program in Alaska focused on integrating indigenous women of the region into the modern world. She was Dean of Continuing Education at Elizabethtown (PA) College and Augustana College (Sioux Falls, SD).

She was a staunch conservative political participant in campaigns in Missouri and Wisconsin, served as a "Senior Senator" during her time in Columbia, MO, even appearing on a nationally televised Fox "focus group" from Madison, WI, prior to a recent presidential election. She enjoyed cooking and eating, partial the German fare of the "Pennsylvania Dutch" home country from her childhood. She was a voracious reader, particularly of historical volumes pertaining to the colonial days and especially focused on the states of MA, MD, and PA where she lived before moving to WI in 1969. She traveled the lengthy Lewis and Clark Trail and enjoyed other historical based trips. Particular favorites were the American Club in Kohler, WI and the Green Bay Packers, as well as Wisconsin's state parks and winters.
