Gladys Townsend

DE FOREST- Gladys I. Townsend (nee Smith), age 86, formerly of Waunakee, passed from this world on Saturday, August 29, 2015 while at Agrace HospiceCare surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 9, 1929 to Harold and Fern (Markley) Smith who farmed in the Emerald Grove and later Tiffany/Shopiere area.
Gladys met John "Jack" G. Townsend through friends at a baseball game. They married in Woodstock, IL on October 23, 1948. Together, they had four children and had 66 wonderful years together.
Gladys was dedicated homemaker and mother, a volunteer at various elementary schools, and an administrative assistant at Prangeway, Verex, and Owens & Miner. After retirement, she and Jack spent their time travelling, fishing, watching baseball games, and visiting with friends and relatives. Gladys cherished books, children, animals, her family, and the farm. She was also a devoted Christian, and she was very active in her churches Lakeview Moravian Church in Madison and First Presbyterian Church in Waunakee.
Gladys is survived by her devoted husband Jack; their three children Cynthia (Don) Moore, Melissa (John) Brunker, and Jeffrey (Debra) Townsend; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 3 brothers and their spouses. She is preceded in death by her daughter Jacalyn Guist, grandson Jason Townsend, parents, two sisters, one brother, and two brothers-in-law.
A Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 4, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 5763 Hwy Q, Waunakee, WI 53597. Visitation will be 9:30-11:00AM on Friday, September 4, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church. Burial services will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park.
