Georgy Vavilov, 84, peacefully passed away on January 6, 2026 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Born to Arseny and Galina Vavilov, he grew up in Sverdlovsk (Russia), where he graduated from School No. 9 before studying Chemistry at the Ural Polytechnic Institute.
Georgy received his doctorate in fine chemical synthesis and began his professional career at the Research Institute for the Pharmacological Industry in Sverdlovsk. Over the years, he became a respected scientist and administrator, serving as branch director for more than fifteen years. In 1991, he returned to his alma mater to teach the technology of fine chemical synthesis, a role he cherished until his retirement. He authored multiple research papers, textbooks, and patents, and took great pride in contributing to advances in his field.
On June 2, 1972, Georgy married Svetlana Vavilova in Sverdlovsk, and together they shared 54 years of devoted partnership. After retiring in 2010, Georgy and Svetlana moved to the United States, where he enjoyed time with his grandchildren, driving them to activities, taking long walks through Madison’s parks, playing chess, and cooking for family and friends.
Georgy is survived by his beloved wife Svetlana, their son and daughter, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on January 12, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at Cress Funeral Home on Speedway Road in Madison. Family and friends will gather at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
