George Joseph Weiland

November 20, 1929 — June 21, 2023

Madison

Dear Friends and Family of George Weiland,

George Weiland, passed away peacefully at 93 years old in Madison Wisconsin. He leaves his loving wife Iris (Riley) Weiland, who with him created an amazing legacy of family, friends, and community involvement. Born in St. Paul Minnesota, George moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his family at an early age.  He attended Messmer High School and studied architecture at Marquette University until being drafted during the Korean War. He served as a Special Agent in the Counterintelligence Core stationed in Stuttgart Germany.  Already married, Iris was able to join him in Germany where they began their life together.  Retiring, after 30 years, from The Gehl Company of West Bend as a District Sales Manager he then followed his hobby of real estates for a second career in Madison, Wisconsin and Naples Florida.

His competitive spirit, exhaustive energy and natural interest in the people around him brought success in his business endeavors and fueled many adventures. George considered himself blessed to have been married to the love of his life, Iris.  The last decade has been spent supporting and caring for her while she suffered the degradation of dementia.  George was a social person, there is nothing he loved more than time with family and friends.   He enjoyed travel with Iris, playing tennis (through his late 80s), skiing (water or snow), taking the boat out on the lake and no day was complete without a good walk with Iris.

George was known to many from JCs or KC’s or St. Thomas Aquinas Church when he made you feel welcome as a greeter. He loved a great game of tennis and thought everyone should play. He also made room for you at the giant dining room table on Driftwood or at The Pines in Manitowish Waters all was welcome at the happy hour on the beach. He was inclusive, connective and full of life and lived it all.

George Weiland will be missed by his wife Iris (Riley) Weiland, his children; John Weiland in Colorado, Mary (Weiland) Lindquist in Madison, Kathy (Weiland) and Eric Thayer in Colorado, Patricia Weiland in South Carolina, Rita Weiland (daughter in law) in Madison and Joseph and Vibeke Weiland in California. He leaves three grandchildren Wiley Thayer, Evy Weiland and Tor Weiland. His sister Mary (Weiland) Schwalbach who lives in Milwaukee and Naples, Florida and brother-in-law Thomas Riley of West Bend who  will also miss him.

He is preceded in death by his son James Weiland, son-in-law Gary Lindquist, sister Lois French, brother-in-law Robert French, brother-in-law Thomas Schwalbach and his parents Theodor and Alice Weiland of Milwaukee
