George Schmitt

Dane - George Schmitt, age 85, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012 surrounded by family.
George was born on February 23, 1927 to John & Martha (Pape) Schmitt. He had 4 brothers, Lawrence, Bob, Bill, and Earl.
He grew up and remained on the home farm. He farmed his entire life with the exception of his time in the military in Alaska. He graduated Lodi High School in 1946. He completed his military training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and was stationed in Wittier Alaska.
In 1958 he married Laura (Helmenstein) Polkinghorn, gaining a son Art, and a daughter Mary. George and Laura had three sons, Andy (Cinda), Tony (Barb) & Tom. George had 11 grandchildren Jamie (Jenny) Mair, Billie Jean Mair, John Schmitt, Laura Schmitt, Pete Schmitt, Jennifer (Jon Acker) Schmitt, Angela (Todd) Volkman, Rebecca Schmitt, Kristen Schmitt, Scott "Benny" (Jessica) Schmitt, and Todd "Fuzzy" Schmitt.
George also had 7 great grandchildren Dallas Mair, Emma Volkman, Dell Volkman, Dawson Terhall, Xavier Landry, Keeley Schmitt, Radley Holiday.
He loved spending time with his family & friends. He also enjoyed horses, gardening and everything related to farming. He was quite a joke teller and prankster. He would really roll out the barrels when Polka music was played. He made his birthday a special outing each year and would make the rounds to his favorite bars. He was known to have quite a sweet tooth and made frequent stops at Gardner's Bakery. Grandchildren loved the opportunity to go with Grandpa to Delaney's in Sauk treasure hunting for bargain finds or getting a whole box of Ho Ho's Hostess treats.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, and brothers Lawrence & Earl.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, August 21, 2012 from 4 pm to 6 pm at WINN-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee, WI 53597. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 10 am at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Lodi, Wis.
