George Glynn

December 9, 1921 — January 11, 2015

MADISON-George Glynn, age 93, passed away from complications of cancer, on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015. He was born in Walsall, England on Dec. 9, 1921, to James and Jane Ann (Lester) Glynn. George graduated from Madison East in 1940, and held different jobs until he eventually started at Madison Kipp where he worked until he entered the U.S. Army in 1942. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to the Kipp Corporation before entering culinary school at the University of Wisconsin taught by Carson Gulley. After completing that course, he worked as a food service administrator at a number of campus residence halls, The Wisconsin Diagnostic Center, Mendota Mental Health Institute, the Oregon School for Girls, Wales School for Boys, and then retired from Oak Hill Correctional Facility in 1984. George enjoyed hunting which he did often especially with his two dogs, Rusty and Topper. He also was a good fisherman both on the ice and off. Salmon fishing was his greatest joy. George was a 32nd degree Mason having belonged to the former Zor Shrine Arab Patrol. He also was a member of the Doric Lodge #283 in Madison.

George is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary; son, Edward (Janice); daughter, Beverly (Daniel) Birdsall; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Glynn and Ryan (Andrea Oro) and Kevin Birdsall; four great-grandchildren, Kora and Sydney Glynn and Lucas and Matthew Oro Birdsall; and a sister, Gwen Sorenson. George is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harold, Jackie, Daniel, Donald, and James.

Funeral services for George will be held at CRESS FUNERAL SERVICE, 3325 E. Washington Ave., Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Please share memories of George at www.cressfuneralservice.com .
