George Gibert

Madison - George E. Gibert, age 92, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017.

He was born on September 18, 1925 to Alfred L. and Sarah Lavin Gibert in Madison, Wisconsin. He grew up on the 2600 block of Mason Street just beyond West High School. There he made lifelong friendships lasting over 80 years. He attended Blessed Sacrament grade school and West High School.

He graduated from West High School in June of 1943 and in July of 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy. He was sent to Japan where he joined the crew of a US Navy ship. That ship was sent to Shanghai, China and returned to the U.S. through the Panama Canal.

George came back to Madison and enrolled in the UW School of Mechanical Engineering. He graduated in January 1950 and began work for Wisconsin Power and Light Company, now Alliant Energy. He worked there for almost 38 years.

George met the true love of his life his beloved Virginia "Ginny" Zeier. They were married on July 23, 1955. George and Ginny were very active at their church, Our Lady Queen of Peace. George was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

In April 2012 he, along with his Mason Street friends, known as the Mason Street Four, had the privilege of participating in the Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C

In addition to his beloved Ginny, George was preceded in death by his parents Sarah and Alfred Gibert and Ginny's parents and siblings. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Mary and Chris Woelfel, and a special cousin Barbara Rupp. He is also survived by Ginny's brother, Gerald Zeier and Ginny's sister, Betty Bayley as well as nieces and nephews.

George was deeply appreciative of the love and support from Doris Neumann, especially for facilitating his medical care and Renee Forrest for her generous time and support.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison, WI 53711, with Msgr. Ken Fiedler presiding. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish.
