MAZOMANIE--After years of illness, at 76, George succumbed to Parkinson's Disease and melanoma at the Middleton VA Hospice on Nov. 24th. He is survived by his loving partner of 43 years, Wendy.
George led a most interesting life. He was a gentle-hearted poet who always said the trees and mountains were his mother and father.
In early life he embraced growing up in the San Bernardino Calif. National Forest, spent a period as a Pentecostal preacher, and served in the Navy for 11 years, across the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War. Assignments included aviation electrician and carrier propulsion assistant. He was a destroyer squadron material officer when commissioned. George attended numerous Navy schools in subjects including electronics, engineering, OCS, teacher training and air control.
After the Navy, he graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry and Philosophy from San Bernardino State College. He came to Madison for UW graduate study from 1972-81 resulting in dissertator status in Adult Education Group Theory, and a M.S. in History of Science. At the UW he loved being a teaching assistant for 5 years in ILS and Chemistry. Later he was a lecturer for Evaluation of Continuing Education and Consumer Law. George was an outstanding teacher at school and in life. From 1978-81 he was a project and research assistant for Evaluation at UWEX in Madison. He retired from the state DATCP in Consumer Protection.
George relished canoe camping on the Wisconsin River and practiced Master Gardening at home in the Town of Berry. He loved the wilderness, books, the Grateful Dead, German Shepherd Dogs and backyard birding. He was a fan of the Cleveland Indians, opera, WPR, and WORT.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Hairuko, their children Tommy and Cindi, his parents, father-in-law, brother, and sister.
Survivors include: his wife of 36 years Wendy; her family of two sisters, mother-in-law, a niece and three nephews; daughter Cindi's two beautiful daughters and two great-granddaughters; a sister, a niece, and two nephews.
Thank you to all the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Middleton VA Hospital where he spent way too much time, and to Agrace HospiceCare for helping him stay at home for 5 months. A memorial open house for friends and family will be held at his home Dec. 13, from 1:00-5:00PM.
