Genevieve "Gen" Wilberg

Sep 3, 1934 — Oct 11, 2026

Stoughton

Genevieve “Gen” Eva Wilberg, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11 surrounded by family. She was born on September 3, 1934, to Ted and Eva Fosdahl.

She graduated from Stoughton high school in 1952 and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Luther College (Decorah, Iowa) in 1956. Upon graduation, she began her career as an elementary school teacher in Neenah, Wisconsin, where she taught for six years. She returned to Stoughton in 1962 and married Arnold C. Wilberg, Jr. on February 10th. She taught one year at Kegonsa elementary before moving permanently to Yahara elementary. She loved going to work every day and after 39 years as an elementary education teacher, she retired in 1996.

After retirement, she devoted most of her time to her church, volunteering for the community, and traveling. She was a member of the church's Executive Board, served as congregation vice-president for many years, and taught Sunday School until she was 85. She worked at Stoughton Hospital gift shop and was chair of the Lovelight Trees annual ceremony. She was elected as the first woman president for the Mandt Lodge Sons of Norway in 1993 and was a senior volunteer and youth advocate for a mentoring program at the Stoughton youth center. In addition, Gen was an active community member at city council and school board candidate forums and in her later years, volunteered at Stoughton Opera House events. Because of all her volunteer work, she was chosen the Stoughton Courier Hub 2006 Citizen of the Year.

Gen loved to travel and visited many places around the world including Bethlehem, Egypt, England, Germany, Ireland, Lebanon, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Nova Scotia to name a few. Of all her travels Gen’s favorite was Norway. She studied at the University of Oslo summer session in 1958 and had the opportunity to visit 4 more times throughout her life. In addition to her travels and many accomplishments, Gen was most notably a caring, generous, and thoughtful woman. Gen spent her life ensuring the needs of children locally and abroad were met both through giving her time and financial support. Gen also loved her close friendships with fellow teachers who recently celebrated her 92nd birthday with her.

Gen is survived by her three sons, Mark (Renee) Wilberg, Richard (Cindy) Wilberg, and Roger Wilberg, 5 Grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a special niece and God Daughter, Wendy Olson. She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold C. Wilberg Jr., parents, Ted Fosdahl and Eva Fosdahl Paulson, and stepfather Orvin Paulson.
