Genevieve “Genny” Greiber, 96, of Madison, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024. Born September 26, 1927, she was the fourth child of George and Elizabeth Karls of Waunakee, WI. Genny married Herman Greiber on May 3, 1949, and enjoyed 63 years of loving marriage.
Genny had many skills and talents which define her long life. Seasonal demands of the farm, family, and church, set the rhythm of her days for many years.
Genny’s hands rarely stopped. As a gardener, she harvested and preserved the fruits of her labor, and shared her bounty with others. Cooking and baking is where her heart and hands met to everyone’s benefit. Genny’s ability rivaled any professional baker in making bread, pastries, pies, and her signature raised donuts. Her 90th birthday party theme, “Sweet Genny” was a nod to both her talents and her temperament.
Genny loved correspondence through letter writing and always maintained faithful communication with relatives young and old. She retained a remarkable memory for names and events of her family and friends. In her sixties, she returned to studying piano and took pleasure in playing for residents of a nearby nursing home.
An active community member at All Saints, her days were filled with opportunities to craft, attend Mass, pray rosaries, and serve others in the community. She enjoyed a good game of cards and the laughter that came with it.
Genevieve is preceded in death by her dear husband, Herman; immediate family members: granddaughter Courtney Clemens; sisters Helen Niesen, and Elizabeth Laufenberg; brothers Alfred, and George Karls, and many in-laws.
Survivors include her remaining siblings, Edmund (Virginia) Karls and Lucille Endres; sister-in-law, Betty Kay Greiber; and brother-in-law, Charles Greiber. Her seven children: Ken(Carla) Greiber, Vern (Joni) Greiber, Ann (Greg) Wagner, Jim (Jean) Greiber, Sue (Dale) Clemens, Mary (Dwight) Krampien, and Kristine Greiber. She is survived by sixteen grandchildren and blessed with twenty-one great grandchildren.
Baptized at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Waunakee, Genny had a life-long affiliation with St. Martin’s Catholic Church, and upon moving to Madison, the All Saints community.
Her caring, generous nature and beautiful smile will be deeply missed by so many.
