Gary
Thornton
Mar 23, 1948 — Oct 7, 2026
Gary "Coach" Thornton passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 7, 2026, at Brookdale Middleton Stonefield Memory Care, where he had made his home for the past two years.
Born on March 23, 1948, in Pennsylvania, Gary spent his youth before settling with his family in Racine, Wisconsin. There he emerged as an accomplished distance runner at Racine Park High School, graduating in 1965.Gary continued his academic and athletic pursuits at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning both his undergraduate and Master's degrees in Physical Education. A gifted runner, he competed in the 880-yard run and held a state record in the event before it was later broken by his teammate and close friend, Mark Winzenried. His achievements in athletics foreshadowed the dedication and leadership that would ultimately earn him the affectionate title of "Coach."
Gary married Kathleen P. Pastick on October 2, 1971, at the University Catholic Chapel, with Father Tom Coyle officiating. The couple celebrated 52 years of marriage before Kathleen's death in 2023. Prior to her death, Kathleen was quadriplegic for over 35 years, depending on Gary for most of her daily care. Never was there such a devoted husband! Gary structured his dual career around Kathleen's care, devoting decades to teaching Physical Education to generations of children at St James Catholic School in the mornings, and coaching Girls Track at Edgewood High School during the afternoons. Gary was so proud of the young people he taught. He recognized the special spark inside of each individual. He had a knack for inspiration and was the embodiment of gentle dignity. He never forgot a child's name and loved following their careers and families when he could, deriving special joy from teaching the children of "children" he had taught.
Gary is survived by one cousin: James Fraser of Chambersburg, PA; Kathleen's brothers: Steve Pastick of St. Paul, MN; Christopher Pastick of Sparta, WI; Matt Pastick of Two Harbors, MN; Jon (Lisa) Pastick of Lindstrom, MN; Dan (Heidi) Pastick of Ketchum, ID; Tim (Cheryl) Pastick of Vadnais Heights, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Gary kept in touch with many of his UW Track teammates and staff, especially his best friend, Mark (Annette) Winzenried and their son, Matt, who has faithfully fulfilled his duties as Gary's chosen POA. Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen; his parents; and his best friend from Grade School, Joe Stoff.
Gary's family and friends would like to extend special thanks to the University of Wisconsin and its Athletic Department for the solid foundation they helped Gary to build his life upon; to Edgewood High School and St. James Catholic School for the career opportunities, necessary flexibility and lasting friendships; and to Brookdale Middleton Stonefield Memory Care for their superior care and for making Gary's last days as best as they could be.
More information to follow regarding the service date and time.
In lieu of flowers, Gary would ask people to consider sending donations in his name to the UW Athletic Department.
