Gary Broge

d. November 15, 2021

Gary Robert Broge, known to all his friends and family as Cork, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 15 after a courageous battle with cancer. Cork was born in 1939 in Monroe, WI, one of ten siblings.  After high school he joined the Air Force, serving at bases in the US and Canada from 1957-1962.  Upon his return home to Monroe, he began working for Brennan’s Market, a journey that would continue for more than five decades.  He married Judith Ann Noll on November 28th, 1964, and moved to her hometown of Madison.  The following year he helped open Brennan’s first Madison location on University Avenue where, as the longtime manager, he was much loved for his good-natured personality.  Cork and Judy spent much of their leisure time at their cottage in Pardeeville, WI, where they loved boating and their long fireside chats with neighbors. They also enjoyed escaping the Wisconsin winters to the warmer climes of Florida and Texas. But their greatest joy was spending time with their two beloved grandsons.

Cork is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Thomas; daughter-in-law, Kirsten; grandsons, Anders and Stefan; siblings, Joyce Wahl, Diane Jones, and William Broge; and brother-in-law, William Noll; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Helen; siblings Russ, Carol Bayhoffer, Bonnie, Virgil, Byron, and Sharon; and sister-in-law, Norma Ploc.
Cork’s family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Michael Goldrosen, Dr. Toby Campbell, and the team of nurses and doctors at UW Hospital for their compassionate care over the past two years.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
