Stoughton- Dr. Francis "Sham" Schammel, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2012. He was born in Kenmare, ND on October 18, 1926, the son of Frank and Mary (Cress) Schammel. Sham graduated from the Univ. of North Dakota and from Univ. of IL- Chicago Medical School. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. On June 4, 1955, Sham married the love of his life, Dolores "Dee" Wick. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country for two years. Sham and Dee moved to Stoughton in 1957 where he opened his private family practice and continued to serve the Stoughton community for 39 years. During his career, Sham was a member of the Academy of Family Practice where he served a term as President for the State of WI, he established the Stoughton Hospital ICU, and was a lifetime member and past President of Stoughton Rotary. Sham enjoyed golfing, time spent in the North Woods, volunteering and most of all being with his family. He is survived by his wife, Dee; daughters, Sherry (John) Matson, Cathy (Jake) Jacobs and Laurie Schammel; nine grandchildren, Emily (Ben) Skeels, Leslie (A.J.) Fuller, Mark (Tess) Matson, Madeline, Allison and Jacob Fendrick and Cole and Cress Jacobs; and three great grandchildren, Henry, Charlotte and Hannah Skeels. Sham was preceded in death by his parents; and son, David. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 323 N. Van Buren Street, Stoughton, with Monsignor Gerard Healy officiating. Private burial will take place in St. Ann Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the Stoughton Hospital Foundation.
