Evelyn was born on December 18, 1919 in Marxville, Wisconsin to Edmund and Minnie (Ewert) Schumann and she was baptized on Christmas day 1919. She was in the first English Confirmation class at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Marxville, Reverend Paul Splett pastor. She was very active in Luther League and she was their first woman President. She was also Dean of Women at several Lutheran Bible Camps. She died on September 12, 2012, at the age of 92.
In 1945 Evelyn was married to Staff Sergeant Elwood C. Slayton. Later she and her husband were asked to help at Oakwood Lutheran Home when it was a struggling organization. They stayed for 3 years until more Lutheran churches got involved with the running of the home. In their early married years they belonged to Zion Lutheran Church in Madison. Later they moved to south Madison and joined St. Mark's Lutheran Church. She was active in the Sunday school program serving as both Superintendent and Teacher, was an officer of the Women's Group, and sang in the choir. In 1982 they moved to Marshall, Wisconsin where they joined Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where once again she took an active part in women's activities. In 1999, after her husband's death, she moved to Poynette, Wisconsin to be near her daughter and son-in-law, where she joined and was an active member of Dekorra Lutheran Church.
Evelyn was interested in the genealogy of the Schumann family and helped to bring the Family Tree up to date so that it could be published in book form in 1984. She loved her husband and family, working for the Lord, gardening, letter writing, reading, and being with people.
She is survived by two loving daughters, Linda Hoverson of Poynette, Sara Slayton (Paul Heckman) of La Crosse, one dear grandson, Jason Hoverson (Lyndsay) of Windsor, two step-grandsons, Lowell (Amie) Heckman of Onalaska, and Max (Kari) Heckman of La Crosse, and 5 wonderful great grandchildren, Eric Heckman, Maren Heckman, Anastasia Hoverson ,Slayton Hoverson, and Nan Heckman. She is also survived by 4 sisters-in-law, Oleta Hill Schumann, Beverly (Harold) Schluenz, Mary Slayton, and Caroline(Dick) Slayton, numerous nieces and nephews (1 in Paris, 1 in Arizona, 1 in Vermont, and 1 in California), and many special friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Elwood, brother Milton Schumann, sisters Esther Stewart and Lorraine Buss, her dear son-in-law Rusty Hoverson, sisters-in-law Verna Hagen, Marge Slayton, Ella Schumann, Marie Madsen, Beverly Slayton, brothers-in-law Donald Slayton, Howard Slayton, Ken Buss, Milton Madsen, Lyndahl Hagen.
Memorial service celebrating her life and loving ways will be held at Dekorra Lutheran Church in Poynette on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 1:00 pm, Pastor Ryan Rouse officiating. No flowers requested. Memorials can be given to St. Paul's Church Sunday School and Children's Programs (Marxville, WI) or to Dekorrah Church Womens' Groups (Poynette, WI)
