Mettel, Evelyn G.

Madison: Evelyn G. Mettel, age 92, passed away peacefully at home Sunday June 11, 2017. She was born Oct 17, 1924 to James and Martha Mae Smith on the family farm in Vernon County, Wisconsin. She grew up the younger of two children, and spoke only Czech until she attended grade school. She graduated from Elroy High School.

At age 18 she took the train to Madison, got her first job at a dime store on the Capitol Square, and met her lifelong friend, Francis Namio. In 1946, while working as a car hop at the A&W Root Beer stand on Park Street, she met W. Carson Mettel and they married in 1951. She had several jobs while raising two children, including working as a stenographer for the State of Wisconsin, secretary in the UW Athletic Department, and she retired from the Sears Auto Center at West Towne Mall. She had many interests including ceramics, quilting, reading, golfing, bowling, and having fun with family and friends.

She and Carson were married for over 65 years and enjoyed traveling, including several family trips to Switzerland, Brazil, Door County, and many winters in Brownsville, Texas.

She is survived by her husband, W. Carson, daughter Lori of Middleton, son M. Carson (Lisa) of Middleton; her grandchildren, Senn, Quinn, and Kaden Mae; her brother, Richard P. Smith; brother-in-law, Charles M. Mettel; niece Rita Smith; nephews Steven and James and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents and Lori's partner, Matthew J. Gray.
