Eve Street

March 25, 1945 — November 7, 2014

MADISON - Eve B. Street, age 69, died on Nov. 7, 2014, at Agrace Hospice Care, after many years of battling Parkinson's disease, and spending over a decade at Middleton Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Eve was born in New York City on March 25, 1945, daughter of Dr. Hinton J. Baker (later Col. Baker, of the Army Medical Corps) and his wife Frances Burnett, a concert pianist. After earning a B.A. from Stanford University, Eve studied philosophy at Yale for a time before teaching philosophy briefly at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and then coming to Madison to study in the Linguistics Department at the University of Wisconsin. There she met
Prof. John C. Street, who became her husband in 1975. The two lived for many years at their farm contiguous with Indian Lake in Berry Township, northwest of Madison; there Eve learned to raise bees and process their honey, but also, becoming an accomplished photographer, spent countless hours taking pictures of the local scenery in every season. She particularly enjoyed learning to recognize the small animals there and the various birds that spent time on the water at different times of year.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's at the age of 40, Eve somehow managed to stay active for most of her years, even planting a small garden each year from her wheelchair at Middleton Village and making greeting cards with her earlier photos to sell for the benefit of the activities there. Her bravery was remarkable; her sense of humor a delight to all.

Eve is survived by her husband in Madison, and in Virginia by a sister, Marie Celeste Simonds and her daughters Caroline and Francis Simonds, the former with husband Jean-Baptiste Pessey and daughters Marie-Cleste and Isabelle Marie Sophie Pessey.

Burial will be in Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church in Madison.
