Ernest Gerber

Sun Prairie-Ernest Gerber, age 90, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2012 at the Oakwood Village East Nursing & Rehab, Madison. He was born on June 5, 1921 in Mt. Horeb the son of Simon & Rosa (Zurfluh) Gerber. Ernest was united in marriage with the former Esther Davidson on June 3, 1950 in Madison. In his lifetime, he had lived in Baraboo, Elkhorn and Sun Prairie. In 1939 he enlisted in the U.S .Army serving with the infantry. During his service, he fought in WW II. He served until 1946 when he was honorably discharged. Ernest then joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard serving in the Department of Military Affairs. He retired in 1979 as Chief of Staff of the Adjutant General after 22 years of service achieving the rank of Colonel. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, crossword puzzles, reading, travelling, gardening and masonry. He was a member of the Sun Prairie United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 333 and the Wisconsin Army National Guard Association. He is survived by his beloved family which include his wife of over 61 years, Esther; daughter, Vicki (Raymond) Nowaczyk, Wausau; son, Michael (Kaye) Gerber, Sun Prairie; grandchildren, Kevin (Tracy) Nowaczyk, Georgetown, KY, Timothy Nowaczyk, Charlottesville, VA, Jennifer (Chris) Cahak, Lakeville, MN, Erin Gerber, Evansville and Christopher Gerber, Seattle, WA; great-grandchildren, Cavyn, Elliana, Elena, Isaiah and Ella; sister, Fern Delvis, Johnson Creek; brother, Clyde (Elizabeth) Gerber, Watertown; numerous nieces and nephews. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Max, Rudolph, Ben, Fritz, Jake, Johnny, Walter, Bill and Paul, sisters, Lena, Lillian, Florence and Rose. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cress Funeral Home, Sun Prairie. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial with full military honors with the Wisconsin National Guard Honors Squad will be held in Sun Prairie Memory Gardens. A reception following burial will be held at the V.F.W. Post Sun Prairie. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association would be appreciated. The family would like to thank the staffs of Agrace HospiceCare, Oakwood Village East Nursing & Rehab and St. Mary's Hospital Cardiac Unit for their wonderful care and support.
