Obituary

We are heartbroken to share that our beloved Erin Ramona Eberhardt left us on Monday, July 27, 2026, after a courageous battle with a long illness. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. While she was a caring wife, devoted mother, and loyal friend, Erin will best be remembered for her unwavering kindness and her sparkling laugh. Words cannot express how much she will be missed.

Erin was born on January 26, 1979, in Madison, WI. She attended St. James Catholic School and Edgewood High School (1997), graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a bachelor’s degree in psychology (2001), and earned her master’s degree in school psychology from UW-La Crosse (2003). In 2004, she married Matt Eberhardt, the love of her life, with whom she raised two talented and compassionate children. Erin proudly worked for the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District as a school psychologist. Over her more than 20-year career, she touched the lives of hundreds of students and staff. Her impact will not be forgotten.

Erin’s favorite thing to do was spend time with family and friends, especially during the holidays. She loved to travel and particularly looked forward to the annual Florida spring break trip with the Eberhardts, the annual week at a cabin with the Gmeinders, and her many adventures with the Marlings. Erin loved music, attending countless Dave Matthews Band concerts and never missing an opportunity to break out into song. She also enjoyed running, completing several half marathons, and was a lifelong reader.

Loved by so many, Erin is survived by her husband of almost 30 years, Matt, whom she met during her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin–Madison; her greatest joy, children Ethan and Amelia; her mother Susan Miller; her sisters Laura (John) Mattek and Julie (Joey) Kull; her in-laws Rick and Connie Eberhardt; her brother-in-law Mitch (Megan) Eberhardt; her nieces Eleanor, Juliette, and Heidi; her nephew Hank; her Godfather Paul Schubring; as well as numerous relatives, friends, coworkers, and lifelong best friend (and honorary sister) Kristy Marling.

Erin was preceded in death by her father, Ken Gmeinder; her Godmother, Sister Joan Gmeinder; her grandmothers Ramona Gmeinder, Frances Gmeinder, and Colleen Schubring; her grandfathers Francis “Mike” Gmeinder and Bernard “Bud” Schubring; and numerous other loved ones.

A visitation will be held at the Cress Center, 6021 University Avenue, Madison, WI, on August 18 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at Midvale Community Lutheran Church, 4329 Tokay Boulevard, Madison, WI, on August 19 at 1:00 pm.

The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Erin’s care teams at SSM Health, UW Health, Mayo Clinic, and Agrace Hospice, all of whom helped her navigate her illness and spend her final days comfortably while surrounded by the people she loved most. We would like to extend a special thank you to the many family members and friends who offered love, prayers, and support during this difficult time.
