Elwyn Weible

August 21, 1934 — December 2, 2016

Elwyn Weible, 82, of Madison, WI passed away early Friday, December 2nd, 2016, at Meriter Hospital after a hard fought battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his son, Benjamin Weible, his wife, Christin Feuerstraeter, their son Zachary Weible, and their daughter, Julia Weible, all of Oakland, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lorenzo and Ella, and by his wife of 52 years Evelyn Vesta Weible (Burke) in 2013.

Elwyn was born in Gilmore City, Iowa on August 21, 1934, but later moved to nearby Humboldt. In 1956, he earned a BA in History from Iowa State and while earning a Master's in History at the University of Iowa he couldn't help but notice Evelyn's infectious smile and soon after they were married on February 4, 1961, at Danforth Chapel on The University of Iowa campus. Before settling together in Madison in January, 1962, they traveled in a convertible Triumph TR3 to the west coast and down to Mexico, living in an apartment for several weeks in Mexico City.

His love of books led Elwyn to work at the UW Memorial Library from 1963 to 1999. He was a lifelong music lover who along with Evelyn started learning Cello in retirement. He also had a deep knowledge of history, literature and genealogy. He was especially fascinated by the life of Alexander Von Humboldt.

His later years were spent traveling to visit grandchildren in California, attending the many classical concerts in Madison, and occasional trips to Norway.

A service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6th, at 4 PM at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road.

Anyone wishing to honor his memory can make donations to UW Carbone Cancer Center.
