Elsie Mae Masters, age 98, passed on February 4, 2022. She was born October 28, 1923 in the town of Linden, Wisconsin to Roy and Alta Spargo Rule. She married Robert Harker Masters August 8, 1947 in the Mineral Point Methodist Church.
Her entire life was centered around family, farm, church, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After graduating from UW Platteville, she enjoyed teaching first graders in the Platteville Public Schools for several years. She also enjoyed teaching Sunday School in the Edmund Methodist Church for many years. Bloomfield Buddies 4-H members will long remember her as their drama leader, her creative plays they performed, the cookies and the laughter. Their group presented their winning play "Half-Pint Windom" at the Memorial Union at the UW Madison for 4-H club week. Elsie was a member of the Dodgeville United Methodist Church and P.E.O.
She will be missed forever by two sons, Mark (Robin) Masters, and Mel (Jane) Masters, and a daughter Marsha (Michael) Hall, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. (#14 due in March). She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Donna (Robert) Ralph, and many special nieces and nephews. She is further survived by David and Wendy Harker and other relatives in Auckland, New Zealand.
Elsie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob and their infant daughter Mae Elizabeth Masters (Lizzy). She was also preceded in death by her seven brothers and sisters and their spouses, Melvin Rule (Ruth and Willard Jungbluth), Lola (Bill) Rowe, Ruby (George) O'Donnell, Aletha (Phil) Booth, Elden Rule, Norman (Carole) Rule, and Elmer (Fama) Rule. Bob's brother William (Margaret) Masters also predeceased her. Mom wrote her own obituary as she didn't “want to be a trouble”; you get this if you knew Mom.
Mom was proud to be 100% Cornish. Mom lovingly worked alongside Dad as a hard-working farm wife for 60 plus years. Many hot meals were cooked and delivered to the fields. She had a love of farm animals and nurtured the weak back to health. She spent many hours caring for grandchildren and taught her children how to parent. She taught many children to learn to read. The one word that best describes Mom is caregiver. She cared for sick children, sick friends and family. Mom was a smart, talented writer and had a quick, funny, sharp wit. She made the best saffron buns, fruit pies, Cornish pasty and potato salad. May she and Dad be finding peace and joy together.
Our sincere thanks for the loving and professional care provided to Mom by Crest Ridge Assisted Living, Bloomfield Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and Agrace Hospice. You were her family these last years and we appreciate you so much.
A memorial service will be held on a warm, sunny day this summer. If interested, memorials are suggested to Agrace Hospice, 316 W. Spring Street, Dodgeville, WI 53533 or Dodgeville United Methodist Church, 327 N. Iowa Street, Dodgeville, WI 53533.
