Elma Joan Hardy Metzloff, of Madison, WI, age 92, formerly of Tonawanda, New York, passed away on December 12, 2025. She was born September 30, 1933, in Getzille, New York, to Marvin George Hardy and Jennetta (Calvert) Hardy. In 1956 she married her beloved Carlton (Carl) Metzloff. She was the loving mother of Christian, of Oak Ridge, NC; Kurt, of Columbus, IN; and, Kyle (Elizabeth), of Madison, WI. Also, she was a devoted grandmother of Valerie, Erik, Tyler, Jasper, Laura, and, Hunter, and great-grandmother of Avery Metzloff. She is survived by two greatly loved sisters, Phyllis Wesolek (Rob Burns, John Wesolek), and Judith Winston (Dean). In addition, surviving are many dear nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, sister Ilean, and her husband of 60 years, Carlton (Carl).
Elma was an active member of Salem Church, Tonawanda, later Dale Heights Church of Madison, and Church Women United, of Madison. Through NewBridge Madison, she originated and lead a Sing-Along for Seniors (West Side Warblers). In addition, she was active in the Indian Hills Garden Club of Madison and the Historical Society of the Tonawandas.
She was a graduate of Tonawanda High School and SUNY Buffalo State Teachers College, Summa Cum Laude. Elma was a classroom teacher and Reading Specialist in the Tonawanda Schools for 35 years and a Supervisor of Student Teachers at SUNY Buffalo State Teachers College for 5 years. In 1990, Tonawanda Schools honored her as a Teacher of the Year. Later, she earned both an M.S. and an M.A. at SUNY Buffalo State College. For a long time, after retirement she tutored privately.
When their children were young, Carl and Elma were counselors at Camp Treetops at Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. At home, they loved gardening, attending musicals, and entertaining friends.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Carl and Elma's devoted caregivers.
A Celebration of Life will take place at Dale Heights Church 5501 University Ave. on Saturday, December 20th at 11:00 a.m. Following the Church services a Visitation and Refreshments will be at Cress Funeral Home 6021 University Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Carlton Metzloff Memorial Scholarship Endowment at Foundry Educational Foundation 1695 N. Penny Lane, Schaumburg, IL 60173.
