Elizabeth Skowlund

Elizabeth S. "Betty" Skowlund passed away peacefully Saturday, February 17, 2018 at age 101.

Betty was born in West Swanzey, New Hampshire on June 13, 1916 to Ivan and Lizzie (Batchelder) Scribner. She graduated from Keene State Teacher's College. While attending summer school at the UW-Madison, she met Alan H. Skowlund. They married on August 6, 1940 in New Hampshire and resided in Madison, Wisconsin. Betty had a lifelong love of learning, reflected in her employment as a high school English teacher in New Hampshire and in her Madison work as the director of adult activities at Luther Memorial Church and her many years as the assistant to the Minister of Education at Bethel Lutheran Church. She organized craft activities for many years at Oakwood Village, loved to travel, was an avid reader, a skilled bridge player, and a Badger fan. Foremost, Betty lived her life as witness to her strong Christian faith. She was quietly selfless.

Her unconditional love and support made her the heart of her family. She will be dearly missed by her children, Roger (Fern) of Pleasanton, CA, Richard (Anne) of Sheboygan, WI, Barbara (Peter) Nelson of Eau Claire, WI, and Peter (Cindy) of Olympia, WA; grandchildren, Kristin (Josh) Nelson Thornburg, Julia (Nathan) Franzene, Mark Nelson, Mike (Jennifer) Skowlund, Jessica (Johnny) Moir, and Tucker Skowlund; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Elizabeth Franzene, Hailey, Emma, and Luke Skowlund, and Christopher Moir. She will also be missed by her loving extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Alan in 1983; her parents, Ivan and Lizzie; and her brother, Leland.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am at Oakwood Village, University Woods at Resurrection Chapel, 6201 Mineral Point Rd. in Madison on March 24, 2018. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow.
