MENOMONIE - Elaine J. Ashmore, age 89, of Madison, died peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2012, at the Mayo Health Clinic in Menomonie. She was born on March 8, 1923, in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Lester and Edna (Harbort) Weary. Elaine had been a resident of Madison until 2006 when she came up to live near her son and his family in Menomonie, Wisconsin. She graduated from Madison East High School with the love of her life, Richard W. Ashmore. She was a housewife, secretary, long term cashier at Kroger's Food Mart, and long-time caretaker of her grandchildren. She was very proud of her Sunday school teaching.
Elaine was known for her art, poetry and ability to win contests that required creativity. She had many awards and won over 100 contests. Elaine Married Richard Ashmore on April 22, 1944 when he returned home from WWII as a highly decorated soldier. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary when Richard passed away on July 14, 2003.
Elaine then lived with her daughter Susan G. McKinney and then spent her final years near her son and his family, Steven M. Ashmore. The children were fortunate to each have the opportunity to support and help their mother in her later years. Her marriage to Richard was a true love story. They met at Tenney Park when she was fifteen years old, their relationship survived five years of war, and they remained committed and true to each other for the rest of their lives. She was well loved and known as 'grandma' by her grandchildren's friends.
Elaine is survived by her son, Steve (Marlene) Ashmore of Colfax; her daughter, Sue (Mike) McKinney of Madison; her grandchildren, Ande, Abby, Ashmore, Carrie Armstrong; two great-grandchildren Jackson and Talan Armstrong, two step-grandchildren, and nine step-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Ashmore; her parents; sisters, Eleanor Weary and Dorothy York; two brothers, Donald Weary and Lester Jr. Weary; and two beloved grandchildren: Nathan L. Ashmore and Robert N. Armstrong.
A Graveside Ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Sunset Memory Gardens, 7302 Mineral Point Rd, Madison, where she will be placed next to her beloved husband, Richard W. Ashmore. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the V.F.W. Post 7591 or Hospice Care.
