Effie Anne Amos

Madison-Effie Anne Amos, age 84, of Madison, died on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on August 28, 1923, daughter of Walter and Leona Snider. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Lafayette and at age 19 earned her undergraduate degree in Bacteriology at Purdue University. After graduation, she went to work for Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company in Detroit, where she helped manufacture flu and typhus vaccines for the armed forces during World War II. She and her husband, Richard, raised their family in Madison. In 1972 she went to work for the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene as a bacteriologist. After retirement in 1985, she and Richard took many exciting trips together and was very active in family- and church activities. Effie Anne was preceded in death by her son, James, one month ago. She is survived by her husband, Richard; sons William of Boise, Idaho, and Ronald of Sturgeon Bay; daughter in law Suzanne Schmidt; many grandchildren, in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 14, 2008 at 10:00 am at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 322 E. Washington Ave., Madison with Reverend Ken Smith officiating. A private burial will be held at Verona Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 13, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3325 E. Washington Avenue, Madison and at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation or St. John's Lutheran Church Emergency Fund.
