MADISON - Edith Lavender Engman passed away on March 25, 2014 in Madison. But nobody called her Edith. Edie was born on October 9, 1924 in Amarillo, Texas. Soon thereafter, she moved north with her older sister Mabel and her mother Mamie Lavender, finally settling in Illinois. She met Chuck Engman, Jr. at a dance while both were working in Chicago, and they were married on April 11, 1947.
Chuck and Edie loved adventure and travel, and spent sixteen wonderful years in the Hawaiian Islands. Chuck worked in administration at the University of Hawaii, and Edie had her hands full supporting her husband and raising her son Mark. They spent weekends together at Fort DeRussy Beach in Waikiki or Bellows Beach in Waimanalo.
When a great job opportunity presented itself at the University of Wisconsin, the Engman family left sunny Honolulu for Madison, where Chuck eventually retired in 1985. They traveled extensively following retirement, eventually returning to Madison in 2001. As Chuck's health began to decline, Edie became his principal caregiver and daily supporter.
Chuck and Edie were an inseparable team for over 66 years, living and sharing life to its fullest. They loved each other without reservation. They were meant to be together.
Edie Engman is survived by her son Mark and her beloved daughter-in-law Hollie. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, and her kindness will be remembered always.
