Dr. Joseph Donald Spennetta, age 54, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack while on vacation in Cozumel, Mexico.

Joe was born on October 4, 1971, and was the youngest child of Terry and Barb (Sommer) Spennetta. He grew up in the rolling countryside near Mazomanie, Wisconsin, along with his siblings Shari and James. Throughout his life, Joe kept the curiosity of a little boy who was always eager to explore the world around him and delighted in chasing frogs, snakes, and spiders.

Joe graduated from Wisconsin Heights High School in 1989. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994 before receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 2000. He completed postgraduate training at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and his Emergency Medicine residency at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit in 2006. He became a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians in 2010.

Joe absolutely loved being an emergency medicine physician. He devoted more than two decades to caring for patients in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, Virginia, Illinois, and Iowa. The impact of his care was reflected in the heartfelt words of grateful patients who wrote, “We felt you were an angel sent from Heaven to help in our time of need” and “You are the kind of doctor most people wish they had.” The admiration his patients felt was echoed by his colleagues. One colleague wrote, “It is my goal for all ED providers to reach the state of excellence Dr. Spennetta has achieved consistently in his documentation.”

Gifted with remarkable intellect and keen observation skills, Joe often noticed details in television shows, movies, and everyday life that others missed. His curiosity, analytical mind, and extraordinary memory and attention to detail enriched both his professional accomplishments and the many interests and adventures he pursued throughout his life. Another part of Joe’s charm was his friendly banter and delightfully silly “dad jokes,” which brought smiles to family, friends, and colleagues alike.

Joe lived with Asperger's syndrome, which shaped both his unique strengths and the challenges he faced throughout his life. Known for his honesty and forthright nature, Joe always spoke from the heart. Those who knew him best knew he had a kind heart, a deep sense of fairness, and a genuine desire to help others. He believed in standing up for what was right and was always willing to advocate for those who needed a voice.

Joe had a passion for speed, whether behind the wheel of his Ford GT or Corvette or paddling on the Wisconsin River or Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. In 2023, he achieved one of his proudest accomplishments by paddling the entire 424-mile Wisconsin River, in record time of 6 days, 3 hours and 17 minutes. Never one to stop challenging himself, he returned to the river in May 2026 with the goal of setting a new record. Through determination, endurance, and sheer grit, he beat his previous record and completed the journey in 5 days, 19 hours, and 48 minutes, cementing his place among the river's most accomplished paddlers.

Joe also enjoyed playing pool league with his brother, bowling, and scuba diving in destinations around the world, especially in Cozumel, Mexico. Whether paddling on the water, exploring the reefs and marine life beneath the surface, perfecting his skills at the pool table and bowling alley, or caring for patients in the emergency department, Joe approached every endeavor with focus, discipline, and passion.

Joe married Rebecca Baker on Oct 4, 2013, and welcomed a son, Christian. Although their marriage ended in divorce, Joe was a devoted and loving father.

Joe was immensely proud of Christian and treasured every opportunity to teach him about the world, share adventures with him, build LEGOs, go bowling together, and help him become the best person he could be. One of the final joys of his life was celebrating Christian's 11th birthday in the Wisconsin Dells.

Mourning Joe's loss and forever cherishing Joe’s memory are his son, Christian; his siblings, Shari Corey and Dr. James Spennetta (Jennifer Seastrom); nieces, Karen Corey and Kimi Mayne; nephew, Josiah Spennetta; his lifelong friend Kevin Ochalla; and his loving partner, Amanda White, who shared in his adventures and life experiences for nearly 8 years.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara in 2011 and Terry in 2018.

Joe's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the patients he cared for. His energy, kindness, intelligence, perseverance, and adventurous spirit will never be forgotten.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, September 2, from noon to 2 pm, at Cress Funeral at 6021 University Ave, Madison, WI 53705. A light meal will be provided. Inurnment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date.
