Madison - Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Dr. Richard J. Hendricks, age 82, passed away at home surrounded by family on Saturday, November 26, 2016. Richard was born in Danville, IL on March 2, 1934 to the late Elizabeth (Klinchock) and Chester Hendricks. He married Veronica Boyd on June 22, 1957; she and Richard enjoyed 59 ½ years of marriage and together raised 6 children.
Richard graduated from Schlarman High School in Danville, IL in 1952. After high school, he received a scholarship to play football at the University of Notre Dame, where he studied pre-medicine and was a member of the undefeated 1953 national co-championship football team. Following Notre Dame, Richard entered Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago in 1956 and graduated in 1960. Richard completed an internship at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL in 1961 and his residency in Internal Medicine at Hines V.A. Hospital in Maywood, IL in 1964. He was stationed at USAF Hospital Vandenburg AFB in California from 1964-1966.
Richard came to Madison in 1966 and joined the East Madison Clinic, which later merged with Dean Clinic. In addition, Richard served as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1966-1971; an Assistant Clinical Professor from 1972-1978 and an Associate Clinical Professor from 1979-2010. Richard retired from practice at Dean Clinic in 1998 to become the St. Mary's Hospital Vice-President of Medical Affairs from 1998-2008.
Richard's contributions to his community are numerous. His professional and volunteer involvement include participation in the American Medical Association, Wisconsin State Medical Society, Dane County Medical Society, American College of Physicians, Madison Academy of Internal Medicine (Program Chair 1970-1973, President 1974-1975), Wisconsin Peer Review Organization Medical Director (1980-1993), Medical Director at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Belmont (1982-1985), Volunteer Clinical Faculty UW (1966-2010), Commission on Aging and Extended Care State Medical Society (1980-1985), Coordinator, Internal Medicine Teaching Program, St. Mary's Hospital (1970-1985), Physician, Boy Scout Troop #102 (1966-1970), Team Physician Edgewood High School (1972-1976), Founding Member, Madison Patient Safety Collaborative (1998-2008), Volunteer Physician, Benevolent Specialists Project Clinic (2000-2014), Medical Advisor, Comfort Keepers-Madison (2006-2016), Volunteer Meal program, Catholic Multicultural Center (2007-2016), Bioethics Committee Member, St. Mary's Hospital, Madison (1970-2016).
Richard was a member of St. Maria Goretti Parish. His faith was a guiding force in his life. He was honored to receive a Leadership Award from Catholic Charities at their Faith in Action Celebration in 2011. Richard will be remembered as a kind, compassionate man who touched so many lives. He enjoyed sports, traveling, and fishing trips with family. He voted in every election since the age of 21. "God - Country - Notre Dame"
Richard is survived by his wife Veronica (Boyd) Hendricks; six children, Mark (Lisa) Hendricks; Mary (Chris) Kleppe; Marcia Hendricks (Wendy Braun), Matt Hendricks, Mike (Jennifer) Hendricks; and Megan (Jonathan) Beglinger; seven grandchildren, Allison Kleppe, William Hendricks, Samuel Kleppe, Madeline Beglinger, Sydney Beglinger, Emma Hendricks, and Joseph Hendricks. Richard is further survived by two brothers; John F. Hendricks and Timothy R. Hendricks and a brother-in-law, Richard J. Boyd, other relatives and many friends.
Family and friends may visit at Cress Center, 6021 University Ave, Madison on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016 from 4pm - 7pm. Additional visitation will take place on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016 from 9am - 11am at St. Maria Goretti Parish, 5313 Flad Ave, Madison. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11am. Richard will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to St. Maria Goretti Parish and St. Mary's Foundation.
