Dr. D.D.S. Jr.

January 28, 1926 — November 10, 2015

Madison - Dr. Carl E. Mohs, age 89, passed away peacefully on Nov. 10, 2015, with the loving support of his family and friends, at Oakwood Village in Madison.

He was born on January 28, 1926, in Shorewood Hills, the son of Carl E. Mohs Sr. and Doris Baldwin Mohs. Carl grew up in Shorewood Hills, a lakeside neighborhood that his father and mother had helped to design and develop. He attended Shorewood Elementary School and later Wisconsin High School, where he made friends that were to stay with him throughout his life. He continued enjoying their company and conversation weekly at Friday lunches. It was also during this time, that Carl began his passion for flying model aircraft and was a founding member of the Madison Area Radio Control Society (MARCS).

After graduating from Wisconsin High in 1943, Carl began attending the University of Wisconsin - Madison, before receiving his orders to enter the U.S. Navy V-12 training program at Purdue University. While at Purdue, Carl's love of music lead him to become a member of the Purdue Glee Club and a Soloist.

During training, Carl's unit came down with Polio and they all spent the remainder of the war working hard to recover at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital. Later in his recovery, Carl was able to take the bus to Glenview Naval Air Station and go on training flights with the instructors. Once back in Madison, Carl earned his private pilot's license at the Morey Airport and enjoyed flying for the next 50 years.

After the war, Carl graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a degree in Agricultural Bacteriology. While at the UW, he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and an active member of the University of Wisconsin Glee Club. Carl then moved to Chicago where he worked for the Campbell Soup Company. He returned to the UW and met his future wife Ila May Abe in class. They married in 1952, beginning what would become 59 years of marriage.

Carl then attended Marquette Dental School in Milwaukee and graduated first in his class. He was also a founding member of the Marquette Glee Club. After graduation in 1953, he joined the U.S. Air Force - Strategic Air Command and was based with Ila May in Fairford, England. While stationed in England, they made friends who they continued to visit and host throughout the years.

After an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force as a Captain, Carl returned to Madison and established his dental practice on State Street. After two years, he moved his practice to the Jefferson Building on Midvale Blvd, where he worked until he retired at 68 years of age. Carl truly enjoyed dentistry because through it he got to know and help so many great people.

In addition to his love of flying and music, Carl was a life-long sailor and loved the water, in Wisconsin and later during the many winters he spent with Ila May and his friends in Florida. He viewed sailing as flying across the water and loved the way seagulls would soar next to his boat. Carl was always a truly great competitor, whether he was flying his model airplanes or racing his sailboat in Florida. He always cared more about the new friends he had made, the people he helped to teach and the fun they had competing together that day, not whether he won or lost.

In later years, Carl always loved spending time with his family and visiting with the many friends he had made throughout life, sharing a story, a lesson or a laugh together.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Laurel Mohs; son, Charles Mohs; grandchildren, Lucas, Michael and Nina Mohs; daughter-in-law, Beatriz Bueno; son-in-law, Lex Dutch; grand-dog, Porter; as well as many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Ila May; his parents; his brother, Bruce Mohs; and his sister, Lucia Mohs.

Friends may join the family for a visitation at Midvale Community Lutheran Church, 4329 Tokay Blvd, Madison, on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 from 9:30 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am. Carl will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery.
