Doyle Beyl, age 88, passed away on June 7, 2011, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison.
Doyle was born in Hawkins, Wis., on Aug. 27, 1922, the son of Ernest and Olga (Olson) Beyl, who preceded him in death. The family moved back to their farm near St. Croix Falls, Wis., where Doyle grew to manhood and graduated from the St. Croix Falls High School. He attended the River Falls State Teachers College, graduating in 1948 with a B.S. degree in agricultural education. During World War II, Doyle served in the European Theater of Operations, for which he received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and a Good Conduct Ribbon. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army in May 1946.
Doyle was united in marriage to Jean Wachter in Melrose, Wis., June 24, 1949. He taught in the Veteran Farm Training program in Melrose until August 1950. On Sept. 1, 1950, Doyle accepted the position of vocational agriculture instructor at Maple, Wis. At the time, this was an unorganized high school district, which was to become Northwestern High School where Doyle organized the first Vocational Agriculture department and Future Farmers of America chapter. A highlight of his work at Maple was the young and adult farmer programs.
On Feb. 7, 1960, Doyle accepted a position as vocational agriculture consultant with the State Board of Vocational, Technical and Adult Education in Madison. While employed in this position, Doyle supervised the completion of the Veteran Farm Training program for World War II veterans and developed a curriculum and training program for Vietnam veterans. With the assistance of several advisory committees, he developed technical training programs in agriculture to support Wisconsin's agriculture industry. Doyle advanced to become the director of the Bureau of Research, Professional and Student Development and held this position until his retirement in February 1985. Doyle assumed several leadership roles under the State Board, including membership on the Educational Communications Board, and the Vocational, Technical and Adult Educational Consortium of the State Board.
Doyle served the Midvale Community Lutheran Church as a council member and the Oakwood Retirement Center as committee member. He was also a member of Poplar Post 409 of the American Legion, People-to-People, and the West Madison Kiwanis.
