Madison - Dorothy "Do" Jane Balch Josheff Cary died on December 18, 2012, at the age of 90, five days after suffering a stroke. Born and raised in Madison, she spent the last 37 years on Terry Place, a street and neighborhood she loved. She grew up on Keyes Avenue with her parents Leland Rella Balch and Margaret O'Reilly Balch Hunt and her Grandma Jenny O'Reilly.
On September 7, 1943, she married Boris Peter Josheff and together they raised four children, Sue, Linda, Peter and Liz.
Do had a sharp mind, an incredible memory for detail, a hunger for knowledge and an adventurous heart. She was well-traveled and when not camping across the United States or traveling the world, Do could be found on her porch enjoying good food and a glass of red wine. She was fiercely independent, liberal-minded, forward thinking and had wonderful sense of humor. A lover of the written word, Do was a published poet and a prolific writer.
She was a Master Gardener and a quilter. A nature lover, she enjoyed canoeing, bird watching, hiking, walking and camping. For many years, Do worked for the Madison School District where she was in charge of Living Science Materials. She volunteered for various organizations including the Verona School Forest, Girl Scouts and 4-H. She was a member of Friends of the Arboretum, Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Ice Age Trail Alliance, Madison Gem and Mineral Club, Friends of Lake Wingra, Dudgeon-Monroe Neighborhood Association, The Lunch Bunch, The Birthday Club, Poetry Club and a group of former Jaycettes who have been meeting monthly for more than 60 years. She lived a very full life and will be deeply missed.
Do is survived by her family, including her children: Sue Schuetz of Cross Plains,WI, Linda Josheff (Phil Springman) of Cross Plains, WI, Peter Josheff (Eliza O'Malley) of El Cerrito, CA, Liz Josheff Busa (Steve Busa) of Minneapolis, MN; her grandchildren: Steven (Deb) Schuetz, Gary (Jen) Schuetz, Julie (Rob) Cleveland, Tess (Jeremy) Hubbard, Celeste and Isabella Busa; her great grandchildren: Seth and Joshua Schuetz, Cameron, Bailey and Addison Hubbard, and Elias and Keillor Schuetz; and many nieces and nephews including Jane Kallander of Madison, WI, and Jerry Hinz of Asheville, NC. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Jo (Nonie) Kinder, Betty Josheff and Arlene Balch, brother-in-law Burt Libby, former son-in-law Russell Schuetz of Ignacio, CO, her wonderful Terry Place neighbors, including Paul, Pam, Jacob and Sam Guilbault, and many beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her father who died when Do was just 6 years old, her mother who lived to age 102, her sisters Marnie Libby and Ruth Hinz, her brother James Balch, her Grandma O'Reilly, her former husband Boris Josheff, her father and mother-in-law Peter and Mary Josheff, in-laws Chris Josheff, Chet Kinder, Frannie and Charlie Shepherd and her foster son Cleo Left Hand Bull.
At Do's request, there will be no formal funeral, but a party celebrating her life will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made in her name to Friends of the Arboretum(608-263-7760), Friends of Lake Wingra (608-663-2838) or a charity of the donor's choice.
