Donald Gjertson

Stoughton- Donald L. Gjertson, age 88, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2012 at Heritage Monona Memory Care. He was born in Stoughton on March 13, 1924, the son of John and Mabel (Bergum) Gjertson. Don was drafted in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines, serving with the 38th Division Avengers of Bataan. On December 18, 1948 he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Nelson, at First Lutheran Church in Stoughton, where they were members for many years. Don was a member of Stoughton VFW, American Legion Post 59 and Uniroyal Retirees Club. He enjoyed gardening, wood working, garage sales, his dogs and spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Don had a big heart and a wonderful sense of humor. He is survived by two children, Jeff Gjertson and Wendy (Greg) Jenson; two grandchildren, Amie (Ben) Reineke and Brett Jenson; three great grandsons, Henry and Owen Reineke and Ethan Sundstrom; and nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and sister, May. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton, with Chaplain Jason Hill officiating. Burial, with full Military honors, will follow in Lutheran Cemetery South. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon following the burial at the Stoughton American Legion Post 59, 803 N. Page Street. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the time of services Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels.
