Derek was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend whose presence filled every room with strength, humor, and warmth. Known for his linebacker build and big teddy-bear heart, he was a gentle soul who cared deeply for the people in his life and never hesitated to show up for those he loved.
A gifted athlete, Derek played college basketball at West Virginia University Institute of Technology, where he was also a proud member of Sigma Pi. His competitive spirit, brotherhood, and dedication were evident both on and off the court. He later proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was deployed aboard the USS Bataan (LHD-5), carrying that same sense of loyalty, discipline, and commitment throughout the rest of his life.
Derek went on to build a successful career in cybersecurity, earning his Master’s degree in Cybersecurity, an accomplishment he was incredibly proud of. As a cybersecurity specialist, he became well known for passionately (and often loudly) reminding family and friends to strengthen their passwords and protect their digital lives. Protecting others was simply part of who he was.
Behind his strong exterior was a surprisingly soft spirit, the kind of man who could assemble a charcuterie board better than most and cook a steak that rivaled professional chefs. Sharing meals was one of the many ways Derek showed love and brought people together.
He found peace along the beaches of Florida and joy in his many interests. In his spare time, Derek enjoyed golfing, boxing, ballroom dancing, watching anime, and passionately cheering on his beloved Baltimore Ravens.
Above all, Derek will be remembered for his loyalty, humor, kindness, and the enormous love he gave to his family and friends. He leaves behind countless memories filled with laughter, good food, spirited conversations, and unconditional support.
He will be profoundly missed and forever loved.
Derek is survived by his loving parents, Phillip E. Brown and Amparo Brown (Blas); his sister, Tara C. Brown, and her son, Kameron T. Love; his sister, Amara N. Cashion, and her family; Michael O. Cashion; Pavao G. Cashion; Apollo E. Cashion; Elektra I. Cashion; his beloved friends, Daniel and Marie Coy and Amparo Lopez; and his furry four legged son Grumpy.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Derek’s life will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday, March 5, 2026 at the Cress Center, 6021 University Ave., Madison, WI, 53705. Full military honors will take place at 7:00 pm. Please share your memories of Derek.
