Della Hurley

Milton - Della Candace Hurley, known as "Candy" to family and friends, was born at West Allis, Wisconsin on March 19, 1913. She attended elementary and early high school at Milton, Wis., and then completed high school at Darlington High School in 1929. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in technical journalism (Home Economics and Agriculture) in 1934. She then joined the University of Illinois Agricultural Extension Information staff at Champaign-Urbana, Ill. After serving six years at the University of Illinois, she resigned to join the Women's Army Corps in 1942 during World War II. After Officer's Candidate training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, she served in public relations at the Post; then on temporary duty several times with the Women's Army Corps and the Signal Corps. She was then transferred from the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, N.J. to the Army Air Corps Military Personnel Division in the Pentagon, Washington D.C. where she attained the rank of Captain. Following discharge in 1946 from military service, she accepted an Extension editor position at Iowa State University, Ames, IA, and continued in that position until taking early retirement to return to Madison in 1972. During her career, she was given the Superior Service Award by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Personal interests have included authorship of a book "Oh, I Hear the Echoes Ringing" about her many relatives who attended Milton College in Milton, Wis., during the years of 1897 to 1972 before the College closed in 1982. Preceding her in death were her parents, Robert Vernon Hurley and Lyda Esther Nelson Hurley; sisters, Ardith Hurley Bradley and Carolyn Hurley Stevenson; a brother, Robert Wesley Hurley; and her nieces, Candace Mae Bradley Durdin and Kathleen Bradley Rutledge. She is survived by her three nephews and their families, George Watt Stevenson of Madison, Wis, Gene Hurley Stevenson of Bowie, Maryland, and Joseph Franklin Bradley of Evansville, Wis,. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Seventh Day Baptist Church, 720 E. Madison Avenue, Milton, with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
